Cruise Line Offers Compensation for Delayed Opening of New Cruise Port

MSC Cruises is giving passengers on three cruise ships compensation after delaying the opening of their new private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The world’s newest cruise line private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, was scheduled to open this weekend and port stops from three MSC cruise ships. MSC Cruises sent out the following in a letter after the cruise line canceled the port stops.

“As you may be aware, the development of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve has been a multiyear project in which we took on the challenge of transforming what was once an industrial sand excavation site into a stunning tropical destination, including designating the surrounding waters as a flourishing marine reserve.

This has been an extremely complex project as we’ve been committed to developing the destination in the most eco-friendly and sustainable way. While we fully anticipated that the island would be ready to receive guests this week, upon further evaluation with our onsite team and learning about last minute operational issues that could impact our guest’s experience, we’ve made the decision to cancel upcoming calls at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve impacting the sailings of November 9 (MSC Seaside), November 10 (MSC Meraviglia), and November 11 (MSC Armonia).”

The letter went on to explain compensation that passengers will be given for the missed port call. Each stateroom will be receiving $100 in shipboard credit as well as a 20% future cruise credit (of the cruise fare that they paid) for a future cruise on MSC Cruises.

The shipboard credit can be used anywhere on board and any amount unused will be refunded to guests.
