Cruises Altered Due to Pier Damage in Roatan

Due to damage to one of the piers in the cruise port of Roatan, larger cruise ships will no longer be able to dock until repairs are completed.

No damage has been detected to the western or the central part of the port, which can accommodate and allows for the arrival of smaller cruise ships. However, the east side of the port has suffered some 35 meters of destruction. This will limit the port’s ability to receiving only smaller vessels.

Collectively, the entire port counts on some 205 meters of dockable space. The impact is substantial, as it is, and cruise ship cancellations are being confirmed.

Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas was scheduled to arrive in Roatan for the first time on May 10. For the remainder of the season, all of the cruise ship’s scheduled visits to Roatan have been canceled. The ship will now have either a sea day or visit another cruise port in the Western Caribbean.

Allure of the Seas is the third largest cruise ship in the world. The ship was scheduled to visit Roatan every other week when she sails Western Caribbean cruises.

Repairs to the pier that was damaged when hit by a cruise ship earlier this week may exceed $10 million. The cleaning and reconstruction efforts have yet to begin. The port is waiting on international evaluators to provide an assessment and diagnosis so they can move forward.

Once damages are assessed, the works of debris removal and reconstruction of the damaged structures will begin. This reconstruction could take approximately three months to complete. This estimate is subject to change by the authorities involved, but so far these authorities have fully collaborated.
